A combination, or combi boiler, combines two functions in one appliance: heating your home and producing domestic hot water.
For Vancouver homes with hydronic or in-floor heating, the boiler heats the water circulating through the floor system. When you turn on a hot water tap, the boiler switches to domestic hot water production, heating the incoming water as it flows through the boiler’s heat exchanger.
The biggest advantage here is you don’t need a separate hot water tank. This saves space and, because water is heated as needed, provides virtually unlimited hot water, as long as your boiler is properly sized for the required flow rate. This is extremely important.
Combi boilers aren’t just sized to your house’s heating requirements. It also needs to be sized according to hot water use in your home.
For example, a household that regularly uses two showers simultaneously while someone is running a kitchen faucet or another appliance will have substantially different hot water requirements than a one- or two-person household.
Vancouver’s winter water temperatures make this even more important. Naturally, when the incoming water is colder, your boiler has to work harder to raise that water to the desired temperatures. A combi boiler that appears adequate based on its heating capacity may not provide the desired hot water flow rate during periods of high demand, like when everyone is getting ready for work and school.

Maintenance Needs: Combi boilers have relatively tight passages in their domestic hot water heat exchangers. Over time, mineral deposits and scale can affect performance, particularly where water conditions contribute to buildup.

Your alternative is a high-efficiency condensing boiler for space heating, connected to a separate indirect hot-water storage tank.
The boiler heats water for the in-floor heating system and also heats the water stored in the indirect tank. Rather than producing all domestic hot water on demand, the system maintains a reserve of hot water, ready when you need it.
For many Vancouver homes, particularly larger homes and households with significant simultaneous hot water demand, this configuration can be an excellent solution.
Strong Domestic Hot Water Performance – the storage tank provides a reserve of hot water, which can be particularly useful when several people are showering, or multiple fixtures are in use simultaneously.

Excellent Combination for In-Floor Heating – a condensing boiler paired with an indirect tank can be an excellent solution for homes and businesses with hydronic in-floor heating because the system can be designed around specific heating loads while the indirect tank handles domestic hot water requirements.
Potentially Simpler Long-Term Maintenance – while no system is without maintenance requirements, separating the heating and domestic hot water functions makes the system less dependent on high domestic hot water flow requirements that a combi boiler must handle through its internal heat exchanger.

A combi boiler can be an excellent choice when space is limited and domestic hot water demand is moderate. It can provide virtually unlimited hot water without requiring a separate storage tank, provided the boiler is correctly sized for the required flow rate.
A condensing boiler with an indirect storage tank makes more sense when a home has higher domestic hot water demand, multiple bathrooms, frequent simultaneous hot water use or homeowners who want a substantial reserve of hot water.
For a home with extensive in-floor heating and several occupants, the boiler-and-indirect-tank approach is often worth serious consideration.
